Chapter Six

Alex bit back a scream. The man was tall, taller than Sebastien with a cruel, hard face that nonetheless still carried a magnetic beauty, the features perfect and sensual. He was just like Sebastien.

“What do you want?”

The vampire smiled as though he indulged a child, a smile which didn’t quite reach his eyes. “I want to know what you’ve been doing with Sebastien.”

“And it’s your business, why?”

The vampire frowned. He stepped closer. Alex hurriedly put her mug on the coffee table and stood up to confront him, almost a foot shorter than the intruder. “Sebastien is soft of heart. He falls easily for humans and in our circles, that’s not allowed. I’ve been dispatched to make sure he doesn’t consort with you again. Do you understand?”

The threat wasn’t even veiled. Horror streaked through her, her heart pounding in fear. Never mind the dangerous line she’d danced on while tangling intimately with Sebastien, it seemed there was more than just him to be afraid of. She nodded watching him closely, ready to bolt.

The vampire watched her carefully in turn. “I came here to kill you. Sebastien seems attached though. You’re the first woman he’s looked at in three hundred years so that must count for something. He and I have a chequered past but I’m almost fond of the French bastard. So, I’ll give you one chance.”

Alex stared, mute with terror.

The vampire smiled, his cruel face stretching into a rictus. “You seem amenable. That’s good. So, if I leave my card here, I expect you to contact me if Sebastien returns. I’m sure he won’t, but if he does, I’ll take care of him, and he’ll never bother you again. All right?” His tone was so light, she could hardly believe the dark words contained within.

She bit her lip and nodded.

He smiled again. “Good girl.” He patted her cheek with ice-cold fingertips, causing her to flinch away in disgust before he flicked a black card onto the coffee table. A moment later, with a rustle of wings, he vanished.

Alex sank down into the chair. She couldn’t believe the power of fear. No matter what Sebastien was, she had agreed to give him up to this other vampire for her own preservation. The man who had touched her and kissed her with a passion she had only ever dreamed of. The man who had made her come alive. She was ashamed of herself.

Movement in the dark jerked her awake. She lurched up with a cry, lunging for the lamp, terrified the flame-eyed vampire was back to make good on his threats.

“Shh, it’s me. Don’t be afraid.” Sebastien’s tone was soft. He held his head at an odd angle, and one eye was bruised black.

“You have to go!” Alex cried. “Your…colleague has been here. He threatened me, he threatened you…”

Sebastien crawled onto the bed. “Did he hurt you?”

“No.” Alex drew her knees up, trying to keep distance between them.

Sebastien sighed.

“Sebastien, he made me promise to…” Her voice faltered. How could she voice her treachery? The concern on his face was palpable.
